Specifying Surface Finishing, Hardware Assembly & Retail-Ready Packaging for Batch 3D Printed Products
Specify FDM cosmetic surfaces, inserts, magnets, assembly checks and retail packaging. Build a finished-goods RFQ with clear acceptance and shipment criteria.

Define the visible surface before choosing a finishing operation
Mark cosmetic zones A/B/C on a drawing or annotated image: customer-facing, secondary visible and hidden. Identify viewing distance, lighting, color reference and acceptable support witnesses or seams. Approve a physical finish sample; a rendered color and a process name such as 'smooth' are insufficient acceptance standards.
Choose orientation and smooth or textured build-plate contact faces first. A textured plate controls the contacting face, not every surface. Keep support contacts away from cosmetic or mating areas where geometry allows. Specify whether sanding and painting affect all faces or selected zones, including the allowed loss of edges and texture.
| Operation | Specify in the RFQ | Acceptance check |
|---|---|---|
| Support removal | Contact zones and access; permissible witnesses | No trapped support; compare visible marks with approved sample |
| Matte / textured face | Plate finish, contact face and orientation | Texture consistency; do not assume all-face texture |
| Sanding / painting | Grit/process, primer, paint system, color and masking | Film build, adhesion, color and fit after coating |
| Critical interfaces | Masking or rework scope for holes, datums and inserts | Gauge completed parts, not only raw prints |
Release an assembly BOM and test sequence
Specify exact heat-set insert series, receiving-hole and boss dimensions, insertion direction, fastener length and assembly torque. Validate a coupon and assembled sample before the batch. A nominal M3 thread does not identify the insert's outer diameter, installation depth or retention performance.
For magnets, state grade, size, polarity, orientation, retention method and pull-test criterion. Check adhesive compatibility with the printed polymer and coating. Captured magnets, foam gaskets and small components need agreed retention and intended-use assessment. Specify gasket thickness, compression allowance and compression-set expectations rather than inferring an IP rating from assembly.
- Use a numbered BOM with part revision, purchased hardware and approved alternates.
- Sequence insert installation, cleaning, coating, bonding and functional checks to preserve fit.
- Record torque range, gauge/fixture and any adhesive cure requirement.
- Separate cosmetic rejection, assembly failure and replaceable purchased-part defects.
Specify the retail unit and transit pack separately
A retail pack presents the product; a transit pack protects it through the actual distribution route. Define locating trays, protective sleeves or polybags, carton dividers and surface-contact materials. Test whether painted surfaces scuff or bond to the chosen protective material after curing and storage.
Define SKU/barcode content, symbology, revision, placement and scan acceptance. Specify retail unit quantity, units per tray, trays per carton, master-carton dimensions/weight limits and the destination's label requirements. Keep a controlled label proof to prevent mixed variants.
| Level | Buyer input | Pre-shipment check |
|---|---|---|
| Unit | Bag/box, protection, SKU and language artwork | Correct variant, appearance and readable barcode |
| Tray / inner carton | Locating pockets, separators and count | No movement or harmful pressure on thin features |
| Master carton | Maximum weight, carton grade, marks and quantity | Count, gross weight, label and packing-list match |
| Transport validation | Distribution route, agreed drop/vibration protocol | Record agreed test conditions and results before shipment approval |
Quote a finished good with measurable release gates
Provide CAD, annotated cosmetic zones, BOM, artwork, packing concept, destination and target batch size together. Request an itemized scope for printing, finishing, bought-in hardware, assembly labor, inspection and packaging. Compare the cost per accepted packed unit, not the raw print price.
Confirm whether a master-carton drop or vibration test is required and who supplies the protocol, test samples and report. 'Drop-test ready' means a defined validation plan; it does not establish a passed test. Approve a packed golden sample and the relevant QC records before releasing the production scope.
Engineering questions, answered
Will a textured build plate texture every side of my part?
The plate textures its contact face. Orientation, layer appearance and secondary finishing determine the remaining surfaces; approve those faces on a sample.
What must I specify for heat-set inserts?
Provide manufacturer/series, receiving hole, boss size, installation direction, fastener length and torque or fit acceptance. Test the exact hardware and material combination.
Can magnets and foam gaskets be assembled before shipment?
Discuss them in the BOM with polarity, retention, adhesive compatibility and gasket compression requirements. Agree assembly checks and any product-specific testing separately.
What makes packaging retail-ready?
Approve unit protection, artwork, barcode content and scan acceptance, variant counts and carton configuration. Transit protection and any required transport testing are separate acceptance items.
How do I compare finished-goods quotes fairly?
Compare accepted packed units with the same finish, hardware, assembly labor, inspection, packaging and delivery scope, rather than comparing raw print prices.
